Author Highlight – Liv Arnold – Release of Law and Disorder

This week I’m speaking to Liv Arnold as she releases her début Law and Disorder. Helping other authors promote their books is an important part of celebrating our diversity as creatives. If you are an author who would like being featured, please contact me.

Here’s my interview with my fellow author Liv Arnold:

Hi Olivia, tell me a little bit about your writing history and when you discovered you wanted to write romance?

I used to write stories at school for fun, but I never thought anything would come of it. So, I did a degree that had nothing to do with writing and started a full-time job in the finance industry. My mum encouraged me to do a creative writing course at RMIT. It’s a short course that runs for 8-10 weeks for three hours a week after work. I loved every moment of the class and ended up doing three short courses. The teachers were so inspiring, and it was great to speak to like-minded people. I workshopped my stories in class and continued with them after the course finished.

Law and Disorder

I started writing romance because my husband plays computer games all night. I thought ‘why not invent my own book-boyfriend’. I used to read out romance passages to him to give him a gentle nudge.

Do you write full-time or do you have a job other than writing?

I work full-time, but I would love to be able to eventually write all the time. So exhausting coming home from work and writing.

I know that feeling. There’s only so many hours in a day. As writers, we just have to fit it in with the other parts of our life.

Where do you write?

On the dining table in my home. My husband hogs the study room playing games, so I have to write elsewhere.

How many books have you written?

I have two books contracted. This one, Law & Disorder, and Etched in Stone which will be out later this year. I’m currently drafting two YA novels too.

Congratulations on the release of Law & Disorder. To know that Etched in Stone will also be released later this year must be exciting. Two books in a year is a great accomplishment.

How long does it take for you to write each novel?

I work full-time, so I write really slow. I spend an hour a day on writing so maybe a year to write a novel.

What is the title of your latest release and what is it about?

Law & Disorder – I’ve watched the TV show Neighbours since I was a child. I used to come home from school, get changed, have a snack then sit down and watch. I love the community behind the storylines and the more light-hearted moments. So, I thought it would be a fun idea to have the heroine and hero as neighbours, but spice things up a little.

What is your favourite thing about being a writer?

Being able to escape into another world. Every time I receive a good review, it’s often a surprise to me but I am so grateful that people have enjoyed my book.

Where are your books available?

Amazon USA

RWA OWL: Self-Publishing POD – love your own books

There’s no better joy to an aspiring romance author than the arrival of that first book baby. Holding that début book in your hands, flipping the pages, rubbing the cover and staring at your author picture may seem a surreal dream, but it’s not. Advancements in technology make it possible for you to self-publish simply – if you know how.
I’ll eliminate the worries from your self-publishing journey by teaching you tips and tricks; what worked for me and what didn’t.
As an indie author of two romance novels The Zanzibar Moon and Kendwa’s Secret and successful freelance writer, I can show you how to take the next steps. I have worked in publishing as a book marketing publicist, developed writer websites and ghostwritten to help other writers achieve their goals. My qualifications include a writing diploma, TESOL certificate, graphic arts, printing, publishing, public speaking, event management and writing for over thirty years.

Let me help you:

  • Avoid the common pitfalls.
  • Celebrate your ability.
  • The A, B, Cs of self-publishing (Aptitude, Belief, Creativity).
  • Drafts, edits, re-drafts and re-edits and the tricks to help.
  • Network with your tribe for the processes you can’t do yourself.
  • The dozen of self-publishing (1. Write, 2. Drafts/Edits, 3. Register, 4. Market, 5. Layout, 6. Book Cover, 7. Proof, 8. Last Edit, 9. Print, 10. Distribute, 11. Social Media, 12. Website and other marketing).
  • Enjoy the creative freedom of self-publishing.
  • Checklists to make the best decisions to produce a book that mixes it with the traditionals.
  • Keeping records that don’t dampen your enthusiasm.

The course will run for four weeks.
Lessons will be disseminated each week in downloadable Word and PDF handouts, along with YouTube videos. The presenter will email all participants once a week before the next lesson.
Prior to the course, a questionnaire will need to be completed so the presenter can see where each participant is at with their romance writing.
To get the most out of this course it’s best to have intermediate computer skills and access to the internet. Anyone who is enthusiastic and willing to learn is welcome to join in.
